Portal 2 is a physics-based puzzle-platformer game created by the Valve Corporation and released on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Linux in April 2011. The game, set in the desolate, labyrinthine Aperture Science facility, challenges the player to navigate test chambers created by the artificial intelligence GLaDOS, using a portal gun, a device able to create portals that link two points in space like a wormhole. The game expands on the original Portal by adding new puzzle elements, such as paint that imparts properties to surfaces, plates that can launch the player and objects over distances, tractor beams and bridges made of light.

The game's music includes original scores composed by Valve's Mike Morasky, and two original songs provided by Jonathan Coulton and the band The National. The bulk of the music was released as a freely-available download across three volumes, entitled Songs to Test By, and later in a four-disc retail Collector's edition that included music from Portal.

'Want You Gone'[edit]

Jonathan Coulton, who provided the song 'Still Alive' for the first Portal, was asked to compose the game's final credits song, 'Want You Gone'.

Portal 2: Songs to Test By (Bonus Disc) is the bonus disc in the Songs to Test By: Collector’s Edition. This edition was a physical release of the three volumes of the Portal 2 soundtrack, which.

Jonathan Coulton's song 'Still Alive', which is sung by GLaDOS (voiced by Ellen McLain) over Portal's end credits, was considered a large part of Portal's success; in designing Portal 2, Valve desired to incorporate more music into the game, including further involvement from Coulton.[1] Coulton wrote a new song for the game's ending credits, 'Want You Gone', also written from GLaDOS's viewpoint.[2] Coulton had discussed with Erik Wolpaw about whether an ending song would be necessary, and how they could create 'an emotional moment' comparable to 'Still Alive', back in 2009 when Portal 2's ending was not yet determined.[3] Other options were considered, such as several 'joke songs' and false endings for the game.[3] Ultimately the game's finale, where GLaDOS effectively 'breaks up' with Chell, was set by the last quarter of 2010, and Coulton played the game as it had been developed to that point to generate ideas. Elements of the ending, such as Chell being told to leave Aperture with the door slamming behind her, led to the development of main chorus line 'I used to want you dead, but now I only want you gone.' Coulton wrote the lyrics and composed the song over the course of several days, with John Flansburgh assisting on electronic drums, and traveled to Valve's headquarters in January 2011 to record it with McLain.[3]

In addition to its inclusion in the Portal 2 soundtrack, a version of 'Want You Gone' as sung by Coulton appears on his 2011 album Artificial Heart.[4]

'Exile Vilify'[edit]

The band The National worked with Valve to create the haunting 'Exile Vilify' used in conjunction with one of the dens of the Rat Man within the game.

The indie rock band The National provided another original song, 'Exile Vilify'; its lyrics were composed by the group and reviewed by Valve to ensure they fit with the tone of one of the Rattmann's dens, where it appears in-game.[5][6][7] The National had expressed an interest in doing music for Valve to Bug Music, their publishing label, which the label forwarded on to Valve in discussing other music opportunities for the game. Valve and Bug Music identified that The National would fit well into Portal 2, as their 'raw and emotive music evokes the same visceral reactions from its listeners that Portal does from its players' according to Bug Music's spokesperson Julia Betley.[8] The song is considered by Paste to be a 'haunted, piano-lead ballad' similar to the band's song 'Think You Can Wait' used in the film Win Win.[7] 'Exile Vilify' is not included in the freely downloadable Portal 2 soundtrack, but instead was released as a digital single by the band.[7]

After the game's release, Valve and The National ran a contest encouraging users to create their own music video for 'Exile Vilify', offering as prizes Valve merchandise and a guitar signed by members of the band.[9] Of 320 videos submitted, Valve ultimately awarded two videos first prize. One video featured a sock puppet that 'had nothing to do with Portal' but 'managed to beautifully capture the spirit of the song', while the other provided an animated retelling of the Lab Rat comic.[10][11]

Original music[edit]

Valve's Mike Morasky was the lead composer for the game's backing music.[12] In keeping with the theme from Portal, Morasky wanted to create music that kept an 'old future through a new lens' approach, such as by using minimalist electronic piano or mangled chiptunes.[13][14] He also wanted to create music that would sound like it would have been composed by a computer, citing the use of 'stiff arpeggios, math-like voice leading, odd rhythm patterns and whole tone scales' as a means to achieve this.[14] Morasky also incorporated the briefly-seen singing turrets—all voiced by McLain— in the piece 'Cara Mia Addio!' after recalling that she was a former opera singer, and used snippets of her singing to create something that still sounded synthetic.[5] Except for McLain's vocals, all the music is based on synthesized or sampled sounds, and even with McLain, her voice was resampled to make it sound like a computer.[14]

Morasky created procedurally generated music, which is generated in real time based on the player's actions. This type of music system was based on the previous success of incidental music used in the Left 4 Dead series, and was developed to create a generalized platform for reuse in future Valve productions.[14] Such music is generated by the player's interaction with various puzzle objects in the test chambers, such as launching from an Aerial Faith Plate. Morasky designed the procedure to build out the music more as the player completed more of each puzzle.[14] Morasky also saw this as a means to provide experimentation to the player, exploring both space and timing of events to alter the composition of the music.[14] Morasky claims that one piece of music 'only repeats itself every 76,911 years, 125 days, 7 hours, 56 minutes and 30.3 seconds'.[15] Morasky designed this dynamic music as a reward for successfully completing puzzles.[3]

Songs to Test By is the three-volume soundtrack for Portal 2, containing nearly all of the music from the game. The soundtrack was released freely to the Internet volume-by-volume between May and September 2011.[16][17] Along with the soundtrack, Valve included several Portal 2-themed ringtones.

A retail four-disc collection, Portal 2: Songs To Test By (Collector's Edition), was released on October 30, 2012 through Ipecac Recordings. Three of the discs include the music already available (listed above), while the fourth disc includes songs from Portal. A mini-comic, 'Turret Lullaby', is also included.[18]

Reception[edit]

Kym Dillon of IGN used the soundtrack of Portal 2, amongst a few other soundtracks, as an example how a game can use both source music (music that is part of the game environment) and underscoring (music that is only for the player) to create atmosphere in games; Dillon also mentions that he 'especially' liked the game's soundtrack.[19] Alyssa Grimley of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer praised Morasky's composing of the soundtrack and called it an 'understated genius'.[20] She also praised Jonathan Coulton's song 'Want You Gone' for the way in which it reflects the changed spirit of GLaDOS when compared to 'Still Alive' from the first game.[20] Kirk Hamilton of Kotaku listed Portal 2 as possessing one of the best musical scores in video games for 2011, praising both the composed songs and the dynamically-generated elements.[21]

For the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards, both 'Want You Gone' and 'Exile Vilify' were nominated for 'Best Song in a Game', while the soundtrack was nominated for 'Best Original Score'.[22]Portal 2's soundtrack was awarded for 'Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition' at the 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.[23] The game was awarded the 'Best Audio' 2012 Game Developers Choice Awards.[24] The Game Audio Network Guild awarded Portal 2 with the 'Best Interactive Score' (along with Kinect Disneyland Adventures), and 'Best Original Vocal - Pop' for 'Want You Gone'.[25]

Portal 2 is the sequel to the first-personpuzzle gamePortal. It was released for all high-definition platforms on April 19, 2011. GLaDOS[edit]

  • Do you know the biggest lesson I learned from what you did? I discovered I have a sort of black-box quick-save feature. In the event of a catastrophic failure, the last two minutes of my life are preserved for analysis. I was able – well, forced, really – to relive you killing me. Again and again. Forever. You know, if you had done that to someone else, they might devote their existence to exacting … revenge.
  • Sorry about the mess. I've really let the place go since you killed me. By the way, thanks for that. [beep][Announcer: Sarcasm Self Test Complete.][beep] Oh good, that's back online. I'll start getting everything else working while you perform this first simple test - which involves deadly lasers and how test subjects react when locked in a room with deadly lasers.

  • These bridges are made from natural light that I pump in from the surface. If you rubbed your cheek on one, it would be like standing outside with the sun shining on your face. It would also set your hair on fire, so don't actually do it.
  • Did you know that people with guilty consciences are more easily startled by loud noises? [train horn] I'm sorry, I don't know why that went off. Anyway, just an interesting science fact.
  • Excellent! You're a predator and these tests are your prey. Speaking of which, I was researching sharks for an upcoming test. Do you know who else murders people who are only trying to help them? Did you guess 'sharks'? Because that's wrong. The correct answer is 'nobody'. Nobody but you is that pointlessly cruel.
  • That jumpsuit you're wearing looks stupid. That's not me talking, it's right here in your file. On other people it looks fine, but right here a scientist has noted that on you it looks 'stupid'.   • [after defeating Wheatley and pulling Chell back from the portal on the Moon] Oh, thank God you're all right. You know, being Caroline taught me a valuable lesson. I thought you were my greatest enemy, when all along you were my best friend. The surge of emotion that shot through me when I saved your life taught me an even more valuable lesson: where Caroline lives in my brain. [Announcer: 'Caroline deleted.'] Goodbye, Caroline. You know, deleting Caroline just now taught me a valuable lesson. The best solution to a problem is usually the easiest one. And I'll be honest - killing you is hard. You know what my days used to be like? I just tested. Nobody murdered me, or put me in a potato, or fed me to birds. I had a pretty good life. And then you showed up. You dangerous, mute lunatic. Wheatley[edit]

  • Most test subjects do experience some, uh, cognitive deterioration after a few months in suspension. Now, you've been under for … quite a bit longer, and it's not out of the question that you might have a very minor case of serious brain damage. But don't be alarmed, all right? Although, if you do feel alarm, try to hold onto that feeling, because that is the proper reaction to being told you have brain damage.
  • This is the Main Breaker Room. Let's go in! [Chell enters the MBR] Look for a switch that says escape pod, alright? Don't touch anything else. Not interested in anything else. Don't touch anything else. Don't you even… Don't either look at anything else, just--well, obviously you've got to look at everything else to find Escape Pod, but as soon as you've looked at something and it doesn't say Escape Pod, look at something else, look at the next thing. Alright? But don't touch anything else or look at any--well, look at other things, but don't… you understand? Can you see it anywhere? I can't see it anywhere. Uh. Tell you what, plug me in and I'll turn the lights on. [Chell plugs Wheatley in]Let there be light. That's uh… God, I was quoting God. [mainframe turns around] Oh look at that! It's turning. Ominous. I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the light. I think the light's on the blink, but just in case it isn't, I am actually going to have to kill you, as discussed earlier. So let's call that three minutes, and then a minute break, where we should leave a leisurely two minutes to figure out how to shut down whatever's starting all these fires. So that's the itinerary. Also, I took the liberty of watching the tapes of you killing her, and I'm not going to make the same mistakes. Four part plan is this: One, no portal surfaces; two, start the neurotoxin immediately; three, bomb-proof shields for me; leading directly into number four: bombs for throwing at you. You know what, this plan is so good, I'm going to give you a sporting chance and turn off the neurotoxin. I'm joking of course. Goodbye.
  • [as Chell tries to press the Stalemate Resolution button, two panels drop to reveal bombs, which explode; Chell is knocked across the room] Part five: booby-trap the stalemate button! [Chell gets up and grabs the portal gun] What, are you still alive?! You are joking! You have got to be kidding me! Well, I'm still in control, and I have no idea how to fix this place! Oh, you had to play bloody cat-and-mouse, didn't you?! While people were trying to work! Yeah, well, now all of us are going to pay the price, 'cause we're all gonna bloody die! Oh, brilliant, yeah, take one last look at your precious human moon, because it cannot help you now!
  • OK, I've got an idea, but it is bloody dangerous. OK, here we go.. AUGH!!! Huh? Oh for God's.. They told me that if I ever turned on this flashlight, I would die!   • Those of you helping us test the Repulsion Gel today, just follow the blue line on the floor. Those of you who volunteered to be injected with praying mantis DNA, I've got some good news and some bad news. Bad news is we're postponing those tests indefinitely. Good news is we've got a much better test for you: fighting an army of mantis men. Pick up a rifle and follow the yellow line. You'll know when the test starts.
  • Oh, in case you get covered in that Repulsion Gel, here's some advice the lab boys gave me: [sound of rustling pages] 'Do not get covered in the Repulsion Gel.' We haven't entirely nailed down what element it is yet, but I'll tell you this: It's a lively one, and it does not like the human skeleton.
  • This next test may involve trace amounts of time travel. So, word of advice: If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely. Forward and backward! So do both of yourselves a favor and just let that handsome devil go about his business.
  • Science isn't about why, it's about why not. Why is so much of our science dangerous? Why not marry safe science if you love it so much? In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired! Not you, test subject, you're doing fine. Yes, you! Box. your stuff, out the front door, parking lot, car, goodbye!
  • All these Science Spheres are made of asbestos by the way, keeps out the rats. Let us know if you feel a shortness of breath, a persistent dry cough, or your heart stopping. Because that's not part of the test, that's asbestos. Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show a median latency of 44.6 years, so if you're thirty or older you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of Canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.
  • [after Chell completes Enrichment Sphere 4] Great job, astronaut, war hero, and/or Olympian! With your help, we're gonna change the world! [tape cuts out] This on? [taps thumb 3 times] Hey, listen up down there. That thing's called an elevator. Not a bathroom. [GLaDOS: I swear I know him..]
  • Welcome to the Enrichment Center. [cough] Since making test participation mandatory for all employees, the quality of our test subjects has risen dramatically. Employee retention, however, has not. [cough] As a result, you may have heard we're gonna phase out human testing. There's still a few things left to wrap up, though. [cough] The bean counters told me we literally could not afford to buy seven dollars worth of moon rocks, much less seventy million. Bought 'em anyway. Ground 'em up, mixed em into a gel. And guess what? Ground up moon rocks are pure poison. I am deathly ill. Still, it turns out they're a great portal conductor. So now we're gonna see if jumping in and out of these new portals can you somehow leech the lunar poison out of a man's bloodstream. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. [cough] Let's all stay positive and do some science. That said, I would really appreciate it if you could test as fast as possible. Caroline, please bring me more pain pills.

Announcer: Powerup complete.
Wheatley: Oh. Okay, listen: Alright, new plan. Act natural act natural we've done nothing wrong… [GLaDOS activates] Hello!
GLaDOS: Oh—it's you.
Wheatley: [shocked, to Chell] You know her?!
GLaDOS: It's been a long time. How have you been? I've been really busy being dead. You know, after you MURDERED ME.
Wheatley: You did what?! Aggggh!
[GLaDOS grabs Chell and Wheatley with mechanical claws.]
Wheatley: [panicking] Oh no! Nonononono! Oh no no no! No! Nooo! Gah!
GLaDOS: Okay. Look. We both said a lot of things that you're going to regret. [crushes Wheatley and tosses his remains away] But I think we can put our differences behind us. For science. You monster.

Wheatley: [in an exaggerated Texan drawl] Hey, buddy! I'm speaking in an accent that is beyond her range of hearing.. [if player hasn't come to him yet] I know I'm early, but we have to go rightNOW! Walk casually toward my position, and we'll go shut her down. [stops when player comes to him]
GLaDOS: Look - metal ball, I CAN hear you.
Wheatley: [normal voice] Run! I don't need to do the voice. RUN!
Wheatley: [now plugged into the mainframe, going down] Here I go! Wait, what if this hurts? What if this REALLY hurts? Oh, I didn't think of that.
GLaDOS: Oh it will! BELIEVE me it will!
Wheatley: Are you- are you just saying that, or is it really going to hurt? You're just saying that, aren't you? You're just- no you're not, you're right- it is going to hurt, isn't it? Exactly how painful are we t-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGH!

Wheatley: [to Chell] And don't think I'm not onto you too, lady. You know what you are? Selfish. I've done nothing but sacrifice to get us here, and what have you sacrificed? Nothing. Zero. All you've done is boss me around. Well, now who's the boss? Who's the boss? It's me! [ding] Ah.. [manipulator claw lifts up a potato with GLaDOS' eye in it] See that? That is a potato battery. It's a toy for children. And now, she lives in it! [laughs]
GLaDOS: I know you..
Wheatley: [glares at GLaDOS] Sorry..what?
GLaDOS: The engineers tried everything to make me..behave. To slow me down. Once, they even attached an Intelligence Dampening Sphere on me. It clung to my brain like a tumor, generating an endless stream of terrible ideas.
Wheatley: No! Not listening! Not listening!
GLaDOS: It was your voice.
Wheatley: No! No! You're lying, you're lying!
GLaDOS: Yes. You're the tumor. You're not just a regular moron. You were designed to be a moron.
Wheatley: [loses his temper, smashes the lift] I am NOT.. A.. MORON!
GLaDOS: Yes, you are! You're the moron they built to make me an idiot!
Wheatley: Well, how about now?! [smashes GLaDOS' potato battery into the lift]Now who's a moron?! Could a moron PUNCH.. YOU.. INTO.. THIS.. PIT?! [smashing the lift down with each word] HUH?! COULD A MORON DO THAT?! [the lift creaks..] Uh-oh. [the lift's floor gives way]
[Chell is inside old Aperture Science, with GLaDOS' potato battery mounted on her portal gun.]
GLaDOS: Did anything happen while I was out?
Cave Johnson: [prerecorded message] The testing area is just ahead. The quicker you get through, the quicker you'll get your sixty bucks.
GLaDOS: Hold on, who --
Cave Johnson: [aside] Caroline, are the compensation vouchers ready?
GLaDOS and Caroline: [simultaneously] Yes sir, Mister Johnson.
GLaDOS: [sounding panicked] Why did I just -- who is that? What the hell is going on he -- [static]
GLaDOS: Hey, moron!
Wheatley: Oh, hello!
GLaDOS: All right, paradox time. This - sentence - is - false! [The FrankenTurrets start to short-circuit.] Don't-think-about-it-don't-think-about-it…
Wheatley: Uh..true. I'll go 'true'. Huh, that was easy. I'll be honest, I might have heard that one before, though; sort of cheating.
GLaDOS: [exasperatedly] It's a paradox! There is no answer! Look! This place is going to blow up if I don't get back in my body!
Wheatley: Ah..false. I'll go 'false'.
Wheatley: All right, so the last test was seriously disappointing. Apparently, being civil isn't motivating you. So let's try things her way, all right? Fatty. Adopted fatty. Fatty-fatty no-parents.
GLaDOS: And..?
Wheatley: What?
GLaDOS: What, exactly, is wrong with being adopted?
Wheatley: What's wrong with being adopted? Um, well. Um, lack of parents, for one.
GLaDOS: [quietly to Chell] For the record, you are adopted, and that's terrible. But just work with me here.
Wheatley: ..and also, nothing, but.. well, some of my best friends actually are orphans.
GLaDOS: Also, look at her, you moron. She's not fat.

Just reading, uh..books. So, not a moron! Anyway, just finished the last one. The hardest one. Machiavelli. Do not know what all the fuss was about. Understood it perfectly. Have you read that one?
GLaDOS: Yes.
Wheatley: Yeah, doubt it. Well, on with the test. Wish there was more books! But there's not.

Wheatley: I'll bet you're both dying to know what your big surprise is. Only two more chambers!
GLaDOS: We're running out of time. I think I can break us out of here in the next chamber. Just play along.
[Chell runs into an Aerial Faith Plate—and is unexpectedly launched sideways onto another Plate and finally into a Excursion Funnel]
Wheatley: Surprise! We're doing it now!
GLaDOS: Okay, credit where it's due: for a little idiot built specifically to come up with stupid, unworkable plans - that was a pretty well laid trap.
Wheatley: You've probably figured it out by now, but I don't need you anymore. I found two little robots back here! Built specifically for testin'!
GLaDOS: [now a little panicked] Oh, no. He found the Co-operative Testing Initiative. It's..something I came up with to phase out human testing just before you escaped. It wasn't anything personal. Just..you know, you did kill me. Fair's fair.
[A plate launches Chell onto a platform surrounded by spike plates]
GLaDOS: Ah! Well, this is the part where he kills us.
Wheatley: Hello! This is the part where I kill you!
[The chapter title fades in: 'Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You'. An achievement with the title 'The Part Where He Kills You' is unlocked at the same time, with the description 'This is that part'.]

[Chell has opened a portal on the Moon, and is hanging on to Wheatley - still connected to the mainframe.]

Wheatley: Ahhh! Space! Let go! We're in space!
Space Core: [excitedly as it dislodges from the mainframe and bounces off Wheatley] Space? Space! Spaaaaaaaaaace!
Wheatley: Let go! Let go! I'm still connected! I can pull myself in! I can still fix this!
GLaDOS: I already fixed it! [reaching out with a mechanical claw] And you are not coming back!
Wheatley: Oh no. Change of plans! Hold onto me! Tighter! [GLaDOS slaps Wheatley aside with the claw, knocking him into outer space] Ahh! Grab me, grab me, grab me!

[Wheatley and the Space Core are floating around in outer space.]

Space Core: So much space! Need to see it all! [excited gasps]
Wheatley: I wish I could take it all back. I honestly do. I honestly do wish I could take it all back. And not just because I'm stranded in space.
Space Core: I'm in space!
Wheatley: I know you are, mate! Yep. We're both in space.
Space Core: Spaaaaaaaaace!
Wheatley: Anyway. You know, if I was ever to see her again, you know what I'd say?
Space Core: I'm in space!
Wheatley: I'd say..I'm sorry. Sincerely. I am sorry I was bossy, and monstrous, and..I am genuinely sorry.
Space Core: I'm in space!
