So I've just watched the two episodes that aired a few weeks back in Season 10 of the show, as I understand Steven Hillenburg was back as an executive producer. As a die hard fan of the first three seasons, and as someone bitterly disappointed with the direction the show has taken in the last decade, I was interested to see if there was any improvement over some of the stuff I've seen in recent years.

First of all, the animation and art style of the show is really nice. The colours and lines were great and the backgrounds were vibrant. It's great to see the programme at least making a solid effort in this area.

Secondly, I found the two episodes to actually be quite...good. They weren't as hilarious or as sharp as the episodes of old, but then I wasn't expecting that. What I appreciated so much in these episodes was that the characters felt like they were returning to their old selves.

Spongebob was not completely irritating or brain dead in both episodes. He was far more like his old 'misguided' self, rather than the 'brain dead stupid' Sponge we've been seeing for a while.

Squidward was also more like his early season self, being grumpy and snobby, and arrogantly dismissing Spongebob's enthusiasm. This was great because when Squidward attempted to get time off at the end of 'Lost In Bikini Bottom' he was squirted with water. This felt like a deserved result of his actions and was not too violent or grotesque. This is the right way to treat Squidward's character and is much improved over the infamous toe nail incident.

Mr. Krabs was not consumed by money in 'Tutor Sauce'. We saw him give money to Pearl and help out Spongebob even when it meant that he was losing out financially. This to me, was fantastic to see. Mr. Krabs felt like a father figure once more, even saying 'Mr. Squidward' and offering Spongebob a helping hand. This is the Krabs I know, and I loved seeing him return.

The fish in these episodes were also funnier and far more friendly, one offering Spongebob a lift. The gags were faster, the writing better and the characters felt likeable again.

Overall, I was happy with what I watched. It was not up to the original shows quality but this is certainly a promising sign. With slightly smarter lines and tighter writing, this show could well be back on form. We saw Sandy appear, Gary was there, there was far less filler, Patrick had one line and it was funny, and the characters were far more familiar than they have been in a long time. I'm not saying the future of Spongebob is necessarily as good as it was in 2001, but it looks a hell of a lot brighter than it did a few years ago.
